| FAQs | Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: How do I download and access the free trial versions of your programs and install them on my computer?
A: You can download the free software package from our website by saving the compressed (zip) folder for the program of your choice in a directory on your computer. Once saved on your computer, unzip open the compressed folder and you will have access to all of the files you need to run the program.
Q: What files are there in the free trial package?
A: The executable program file, sample input/output data file(s), a user guide, and a license agreement.
Q: Why do I need a license agreement to run the free trial versions of your programs? What if I don't purchase the programs?
A: All of our programs are proprietary and they may not be used without a license. The free trial packages are offered under a free license to run the programs for a limited time, but it is a license nonetheless.
Q: Where should I install your program files on my computer?
A: In any directory you like provided that the executable program and the input-data files are all installed in the same directory. You may want to name the new directory as "runmakers".
Q: How do I run the trial versions on my computer?
A: Just double click on the executable file "MRWE", and the program will start executing.
Q: How many free trial runs can I run with the free trial versions?
A: 30.
Q: What happens after all free trial runs have been used?
A: The program will stop executing, and you will be asked for, and you will be given the option to purchase a "license activation key", which you can purchase an instantly receive from our website.
Q: What do I have to do if I decide to purchase a license?
A: You can always purchase a license activation key from our website at any time, before or after the free license expires. We recommend that you do not purchase a license until you have tested our programs for free. We have a no-refund policy and you will want to be sure that you are making the right decision before purchasing. When you purchase a license activation key you will instantly receive a file that contains the key to activate a purchased license, which will allow you to run the program for the duration of the license. Just save the license activation key file on your computer, and open the file and copy and paste the license activation key in the license dialog window that appears on your computer screen when you execute the program. Once the license activation key is entered, the program will execute. You will need to enter the license activation key only once. But you may want to safely archive the license activation key file just in case you need it in the future. You may use the key on more than one computer, but please understand this is your personal key, you are responsible for it, and you may not share it with anyone else.
Q: Are the program trial versions the same as the licensed versions?
A: Yes, they are one and the same programs.
Q: Do the trial versions use the same input-data as the licensed versions?
A: Yes, the trial versions and the trial versions will run with the same input-data.
Q: How long are the programs licensed for? What happens when the license expires?
A: The licenses for PRO and JUNIOR are good for 1 year (380 days from the day you enter the license activation key for the purchased license, so you have a grace period of 15 days). The license for Garvey is good for two months (70 days from the day you enter the license activation key for the purchased license, so you have a grace period of 10 days). The programs will not execute after the expiration date unless the license is re-activated.
Q: What input data do I need to run the programs?
A: See the sample input-data files provided in the free trial packages, as well as Section 5 in the user guide.
Q: What file name should I use to save the input data for my team?
A: You will always want to save your team stats as "pstats.dat" when you run RunmakerPro, and as “gstats.dat” when you run GamebusterGarvey. Because you cannot have two files in the same directory with the same name, you will need to either change the name of the sample data files, or move the sample data files to a different directory. All of the input data for RunmakerJunior are entered in real time and there is no need to prepare an input data file to run that program.
Q: Is preparing the input data and running the programs difficult, cumbersome?
A: Yes, could be initially. But after you run a program a few times, preparing the input data and running the programs will neither be difficult nor cumbersome. In fact this can become routine for some. Remember, after completing the first input data file for your team, all that you will be doing after that is updating the file using the updated stats for your team.
Q: Are the program outputs automatically saved?
A: No, but you can save the screen output of any program using file names that you choose (e.g., run1, run2, run3, etc.) for future reference, in any directory on your computer.
Q: What do I do if I have other questions?
A: You can use the Contact Us form to send in your questions, and we will respond to all questions by email on a first-come, first-serve basis. The most common runtime error encountered by our customers is related to input-data entries, when the program is unable to read your tam data. This is usually due to missing data, or a data miss-entry, including sometimes minor formatting errors. Examples: making more, or less, entries for a player than expected by the program, having two commas, or no comma, to separate different entries, mixing numeric and alphabet input such as when you enter a number when the program expects a name, or vice versa.
Q: Can I have my questions answered by telephone?
A: No. We are not in a position to answer questions by telephone at this time, but if you include your telephone number with your question and if we are unable to resolve your query by email, we will try to call you and have your question resolved that way.
Q: How come that when I run the programs I get very small changes in the runner scoring efficiency even though I have changed the batting order? Isn't that saying that the batting order may not be important after all?
A: Good question. Indeed there may be situations when the batting order may not be important. One extreme example of course is when all the batters have the same batting averages and on-base percentages, or when the differences are very small. In that case all the batters will perform equally good or equally bad, and changing the batting order will be of little consequence. The same thing can happen also if the pitcher's ERA (earned run average) is too high or a too low: in this case, all of the batters will perform equally well or equally badly, and differences in the batters skills in these extreme cases are masked or muted. But for most situations, the batters skills will be normally reflected in the runner scoring efficiencies. Also, you must realize that even small differences in the scoring efficiency are important. Note that the difference in 2005 between the team with the highest runner scoring efficiency (Texas Rangers) and the team with the lowest scoring efficiency (Washington Nationals) was only 9 percentage points (.464 versus .375). This means that an increase of as little a 1 percentage point in the runner scoring efficiency can move a major league team 3 or 4 spots up in the rankings!
Q: Isn't there a way to identify superior batting orders without having to run and rerun your programs using different batting orders?
A: Our flagship program RunmakerAlpha does exactly that. It plays the game using all possible batting orders and identifies batting orders that are superior to the initial batting order entry. But that program requires more input data and more time to run, and it is not available for licensing at this time.
Q: How come your programs use only a few stats, aren’t the other stats important?
A: We certainly can use more player stats, as we do to run RunmakerAlpha and GamemakerCharlie. We have decided to limit the stats in the current program offers to those that we think are more important, so that the input data preparation does not distract from the powerful concepts that underlie our programs. But rest assured that we can incorporate much more player stats, as we certainly do to run RunmakerAlpha and GamemakerCharlie, and we may very well do that in our future program offers.
